NBA expansion is on the horizon, with the 2028 rumored to be a realistic timeline. It’s not finalized, but it is likely enough that front offices will already be thinking ahead and strategizing about the repercussions.

Why does that matter now? Because expansion does not just add teams. It introduces an expansion draft. And that draft could quietly reshape how teams approach roster building years in advance. For the Charlotte Hornets, the ripple effects could start as early as the 2026 NBA Draft.

The Expansion Draft Problem

Under current expansion rules, each team can protect up to 8 players. Everyone else becomes eligible to be selected by the incoming franchises. That may sound manageable until you map it onto Charlotte’s situation.

By 2028, anyone selected in the 2026 draft will be entering their third season, often the moment young players break out. Charlotte is also projected to have multiple first round picks in 2027. The roster is already deep with young, developing talent none of which the team will want to lose.

In other words, the Hornets could face a problem they have rarely had to worry about in recent years: too many good players, not enough protection slots.

Projecting Charlotte’s Protection Board

Let’s break this down by tiers, projecting who the Hornets might prioritize in a 2028 expansion draft scenario. Ages are based on 2028.

Tier 1 - Untouchable Core
